Personal message from Bill Vancil
Don't Fear the Big Dogs is not just about cancer. It's a personal look into the lives of an older dad and his teenage daughter sharing an adventure. It's meant to be a fun and easy -to-read book ...with a important message. I do not profess proton radiation to be the only treatment choice men with prostate cancer should consider, but it was the best treatment for me and I write about it in "Don't Fear the Big Dogs". I visit Loma Linda University Medical Center twice a year as a member of the Proton Treatment Center Advisory Council. I have met or talked with several men there who heard about proton through my book or from radio or TV interviews I've done. That's what it's all about for me.
Over 220,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the United States. In the year 2004, I was among them. In the U.S. prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men. Thanks to God and my friends at Loma Linda, I was not part of that statistic.
It is important that men have regular checkups for prostate cancer. If detected early, it can be more easily treated. There are several treatment options available for prostate cancer, each with its advocates, and each with its advantages and disadvantages. One that's relatively unknown, Conformal Proton Radiation Therapy (Proton Treatment) practiced at Loma Linda University Medical Center in southern California is gaining in popularity due to excellent cure rate results, lack of risk and discomfort during treatment and minimal side effects. I first learned of this at www.protonbob.com, the website of an international prostate cancer support group, The Brotherhood of the Balloon.
My hope is that you will read my book and then tell others about it, especially those men and the families of men who might have to deal with challenges in their lives.
This is a book that will make you laugh and make you cry. And, in the right hands...it will help save lives.
Bill
